Goals that matter
We have aligned our goals to the scientific limits that define a safe space for humanity and a just future for our people and nature. Limiting global temperatures to a level where humanity can flourish requires halving global carbon emissions by 2030 and net zero by 2050.
We are committed to improving quality of life and the environment while continuing to grow and create meaningful opportunities for our employees, customers, and society. While we’ve made strong progress toward our 2030 Sustainability Goals, we recognize the need to evolve our commitments in step with the latest scientific guidance. That’s why we are updating our carbon neutrality goal. Instead of only aiming for carbon neutrality by 2030, we are now committing to achieving net zero by 2050—a target validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
To stay on track, we will continue to pursue ambitious interim goals:
These targets reflect our commitment to sustainable growth and our responsibility to lead with science-based action.
Since 2018, we have reduced the total amount of GHG emitted by our operations by 35%, which places us on track to meet our target. By 2030 we are committed to achieving a science-based target of 50% reduction (from a 2018 baseline) of our Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions, and to achieving net zero by 2050. Our most recently publicly available data are provided in the table below. Read our Sustainability Report to learn more.
Scope 1 emissions |
183,752 metric tons CO2e from natural gas, other stationary and mobile fuels, fleet, refrigerants, and wastewater treatment |
Scope 2 market-based |
451,886 metric tons CO2e from purchased electricity using the market-based approach |
Scope 3 |
51,617848 metric tons of CO2e from our value chain and product use emissions |
Eaton uses an independent verification body to verify our GHG data. The verification includes a “reasonable” level of assurance for Scope 1 emissions (direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company) and Scope 2 emissions (indirect emissions from goods or resources with potential GHG emissions, mostly from the purchase of electricity). The Scope 3 verification includes a "limited" level of assurance for emissions of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). Our most recent publicly available verification statement is provided here.
